Christmas Presents & Birthday Invitations

The first picture is my favorite of Cooper's Christmas presents. It's a toddler-sized backpack with a picture of Noah's Ark and it's personalized with his name! He got this from his Mimi and Poppy(my parents). Even though it's toddler sized we are using it as our diaper bag. It's just too cute not to!

The second picture is the invitation to Cooper's first birthday party! I can't believe we will be celebrating one year with our little man in a couple weeks! It has really flown by! But more on this later... We will be having a Pooh's First Birthday themed party. If any of you have any party suggestions I would love to hear them! I'm especially drawing a blank on the menu! I'd like to do finger foods. I figure a cheese & cracker tray and fruit & veggie tray is a good start, but other than that I'm clueless. So let's hear some suggestions!

Leaky Diapers & Leggings

Last night we stayed with my husband's parents. We realized after we got there that we had forgotten Cooper's bag of clothes(we had diapers, wipes, any medicines we might need though). Clothes were the only thing missing. I had a couple extra outfit in the diaper bag he could sleep in so we decided not to go back home after the clothes. BIG MISTAKE!
This morning he had a big poop and it came out of the side of his diaper ruining one of 2 outfits he has here. A little while ago he proceeded to have another big runny poop that got on the pants of his last outfit. Thankfully the shirt was still clean because it was not a onesie! I was worried about his little legs getting cold playing on the cold hardwood floor though so...... I made him some leggings! I cut the foot parts off of a pair of tube socks and VOILA! Warm legs! Haha

Christmas Happenings!

If you have been reading you know that we have a family bed. Cooper has never been asleep in his own crib. Well after Daddy waking him up at 6 am to open presents, taking about an hour nap, and getting back up to go to Papaw & Nana's across the road, Cooper was Christmased-out. He fell asleep and I carried him home. I decided to try and lay him down because he was OUT. I laid him in his crib and not a flinch! So at almost a year old, Cooper slept in his crib for the very first time!
Cooper got a tricycle from Santa! He loved it! We had to hide it so he would open the rest of his presents!
I hope everyone else had a great Christmas, too!

Mac & Cheese!!!

If you know me, you know that I am very picky about what my son eats. When I could I made his baby food. He does not have anything with cow's milk. This includes yogurt. I find it ridiculas that people give their baby's those yogurt melts and the yogurt made for babies. They are not supposed to have cow's milk until they are 1! I would also like to know what Gerber is thinking putting cow's milk in baby food made for infants 6 months plus!??
Anyway, since Cooper is only about 2 weeks away from turning 1, *sniffle, sniffle* I decided to cave and let him have his first mac and cheese! It was organic so that made me feel better about it. I had a harder time with this than I did when I started him on solids and gave him rice cereal! I was very emotional. I guess because I knew after I give him cow's milk he won't be as dependant on my milk.
He liked the mac & cheese ok but he was starting to get fussy so he wasn't very interested in eating. He ate about ten bites and then refused to eat another bite. I guess its good he wouldn't eat much to start him on milk slowly so it doesn't upset his tummy. Its the end of an era :(

A Stuffy Nose and a Watchful Mommy

Last night was no fun at all. Cooper is getting a cold so he can't breathe through his nose. Even after using saline and a bulb suction thing several times a day he's still stuffy. My nana bought him a Nap Nanny. Its a very expensive sleeping device that keeps baby elevated helping with stuffy noses, ear infections, GERD, etc. When I tried to put Cooper in it last night I discovered he is too tall for it now. So on to Plan B! I had a pregnancy wedge pillow made by Boppy that was a god-send in the last couple months of my pregnancy. I laid Cooper on it, and it worked perfectly! The wedge plus the humidifier kept him breathing comfortably! The only problem was I couldn't sleep because I was so nervous about him sleeping on a pillow! Therefore I stayed awake watching him for the first sign of smothering! I finally convinced myself he would be ok and fell asleep sometime after 5:30 AM. Needless to say it was a rough night and got even more rough when he decided to wake up at 7:00 AM when Daddy got home! Thankfully my wonderful husband kept him for a couple hours so I could get a little sleep. By that time Cooper was ready for a nap so I got to sleep a couple more hours! So thankful for my wonderful husband that worked all night and came home and watched the baby so I could sleep!

Cooper is 11 months old TODAY!!!

I can't believe my little booger will be a year old in one month! This past year has flown by! It has been the best year of my life though. Even with all the ups and downs it has been wonderful.
As of November 17, he weighes 21 pounds and is 28 3/4 inches tall(I guess since he is standing more than he lays down its tall not long anymore). He takes steps but refuses to walk more than 3. He will walk holding onto 1 hand now instead of having to hold both hands. He has stacking cups in the bath tub and has figured out the big ones can't go into the little one but the little ones will go into the big ones. It was so sweet watching him figure it out all by himself!
He is getting better about eating solid food. Sometimes he will eat two jars and sometimes not even a half. He is still nursing. Anywhere from 4 to 6 feedings a day. My initail goal when I was pregnant was to nurse until he was 6 months old and after I started I moved it to a year. Now I've decided I'm going to try baby-led weaning, within reason though. I will not be nursing a 3 year old. Some women do, and that's fine; it's just not for me. So I guess we will just see what happens.
I can't believe he is on the verge of toddler-hood. But I am excited to see what God has in store for our future!

The Future

I wasn't going to blog about this until I was completely sure, but I put the plan in motion today so here goes.
I have finally decide what I want to do with my life (career wise). I was planning on taking a 6 week course and getting a certificate in phelbotomy(taking blood). It wasn't that I was so interested in blood and wanted to pursue this as a career. It was something I could do fast and start earning money to help support my family.
Well this week I rediscovered a career that I had thought about before but never seriously. I started reading the blog of someone who is also pursuing this career and it suddenly occured to me: that's what I need to do!
Ok, I've kept you in suspense long enough. Next semester, barring any unforseen circumstances, I will be starting at a local college getting my RN. After I get this degree I will be working towards becoming an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). An IBCLC assists breastfeeding mothers. They may be employeed by a hospital, pediatrician's office, or may be hired privately.
I am so excited to start to work towards this. I know it will be hard, but it will be worth it in the end to be able to provide for my family with a job that is rewarding and I will enjoy. I would definately appreciate your prayers as I start this new chapter in my life :)

Wordy Baby

I made a list of all the words Cooper says and was amazed to find he says 20 words!!! I was so proud! Some of them he only says repeating them after us but about 15 of them he says using them correctly! Such as kitty, bath, mama, dada, book, and yes he says boob. I tried to teach him to say milk but everyone else said "mommy, Cooper wants some boobie!". And it stuck. Today I was trying to get him to say milk to which he kept replying "boob." I guess he was done waiting for it because after going back and forth about it 3 or 4 times he screamed boob and pinched both of my boobs(through my shirt)! Then I screamed and he started crying. It was quite a scene...

Cooper's Grand Entrance

Until 30 weeks my pregnancy was pretty much uneventful( except normal milestones like kicking and such). At 30 weeks I started having contractions at school. After they went on for about an hour I decided to call my doctor. By the time I got to the doctor they had stopped and I wasn't dilated. So I went home with instructions to only get up to the bathroom for a couple days. After that everything was fine and went on normally.
At 35 weeks, I couldn't sleep for some reason one night. At about 3 in the morning I found out why. I started vomiting. After the first time I started having strong contractions. I waited to see if they would stop and they didn't. I called the dr and went to the hospital. They checked me and I was 2 cm. They gave me an IV and the contractions stopped. I went home. That evening the contractions started again. I waited and they wouldn't stop so on to the hospital again. I was still 2 cm when I got there. They gave me an IV again and waited. The contractions weren't stopping this time. They checked me again and I was 3 cm and 50% effaced. I was then admitted for observation. I had to stay all night. Overnight the contractions stopped and I was allowed to go home.
For the next 4 weeks I stayed 3 cm. I was so over being pregnant. I wanted my baby! Coop was growing fast. At 38 weeks my doctor did an ultra sound and decided he was ready to come out. My induction was scheduled for the following Monday at 2 am.
We got up and headed to the hospital that morning. I was checked in, put in a hospital gown, and given an IV and cervidil. It was supposed to get my cervix ready for labor but it threw me straight into labor by 3 am. My contractions were one on top of the other with no break between. A nurse came to my room with pain medicine and asked if I wanted any. I didn't want it but I needed it so I took it. My doctor broke my water and advised me to get my epidural before she started pitocin. The epidural was awful. It hurt SOOO bad. The needle wasn't what hurt though; when the anesthesiologist was trying to postition it he kept hitting nerves in my back and sending waves of pain down my legs and through my back. This was the worst part of the whole thing.
By this time I was 5 cm but Cooper's heart rate kept diving with my contractions. They thought it was because the cord was being compressed because of the lack of fluid and to put in a monitor that would also pump in more fluid to cushion the cord. When a nurse was checking me to do this she got a strange look on her face and asked me or my husband to push the call button. I did and she told the nurse that answered that she needed more people and to call my doctor and get her over there. Then she said the word I will never forget: prolapsed cord.
For those of you that don't know, a prolapsed cord is when the umbilical cord is coming out before the baby. This means when the mother has a contraction, the babies head cuts off all of its blood flow and oxygen. It is a very dangerous emergency situation.
The nurse that found it stayed between my legs holding Cooper's head up off the cord. Other nurses ran frantically around the room unhooking monitors and such. They threw a sheet over the nurse between my legs and she stayed there on the ride to the operating room. When we got to the operating room, Jerry had to wait outside while they got me ready and he had to put on scrubs. I saw my doctor in the next room washing her hands, putting on scrubs, etc. When she came in the room she came straight over to me and said, "You and the baby are going to be just fine. We are going to get him out." This made me feel a little better, even though I was still bawling like a baby. They let Jerry back in and get stood by my head. They put the curtain up in front of my face but they did it so quickly if I had stretched my neck a little I could have seen everything they did! I did NOT want to see that! Just a couple minutes later I heard a baby cry. At first it was so surreal I didn't think I was Cooper, but just for a second. Then Jerry put his face against mine and we both cried. Then Jerry brought Coop over to me so I could see him. I was shaking all over and a little sick so all I could do was smile. from the time the nurse found the prolapsed cord to the moment he cried took only 7 minutes! Cooper was born at 12:05 pm. He weighed 8 lbs 2 oz and was 21 1/2 inches long.
About an hour after he was born I was wheeled into recovery. By this time I was only shaking slighty and was way more alert. I was handed the most beautiful bundle of blankets I had ever seen. I will never forget those first precious moments with my baby boy. He then got a bath and I nursed him. His oxygen saturation levels stayed at 100% but he was grunting a little so they did lung xrays. I went back to my room and 3 hours later (really only about 30 minutes) they brought him back from his xrays. Jerry and I held him and our families held him then he nursed again.
We spent 3 more days in the hospital because I was not sleeping. Cooper wouldn't sleep in his bassinet and they won't let you sleep with your baby in the bed so I stayed up and held him so that he could sleep. I was so exhausted and had a couple panic attacks so my doctor made me stay an extra night and let Cooper go to the nursery. It killed me but I let him. On January 15 we brought our baby boy home. We are so happy to have him and almost losing him made us extra thankful! He is the most wonderful blessing!

2/3 of Our Family Bed

This was taken at a cabin in Crossville. We went to watch Jerry's sister, KD, play in a softball tournament but I had an ear infection and Coop was just getting over one so we stayed in the cabin all day, alternating between sleeping and watching an NCIS marathon :)
