Rear vs. Forward

Since Cooper turned one, I get asked atleast daily when I am going to turn his car seat around and let him face forward.

Well the answer is I don't know! Well, when he is too tall to be rear-facing (I think on our car seat that's around 35 inches). I believe the longer he can stay rear-facing the safer he will be. Just because he has control of his neck and head doesn't mean he would in a crash at 55 mph. In my first year as a mom I've learned through trial and error that the AAP guidelines aren't always what is best for my child. I don't want this to be one of the errors.

So Mommys, what is your opinion of this? Did you turn your child(ren) around at his or her first birthday? Did you wait a little while? Or even turn them around before he or she turned one? Let's hear it!

we turned happy baby around at 1 yr. because our weight limit for her rear facing was 22 lbs. however, our ped. said "they" are rethinking the safety guidelines. "they" now say kids should rear face as long as possible. it is always safer facing the rear. I would not have minded her staying rear facing if we had something other than a carrier seat. someone bought us a front facing for our baby shower and it does not have the option of rear facing. i have to admit i was anxious to turn her around because she is so tall and i think was uncomfy in her carrier. however, the rock really wanted to wait until 1 yr.

thought of one more thing....either way front or rear they are safer than we were as babies...running around in no car seat. does your rear facing have a weight limit?

We have a convertible car seat that is for 5-100 lbs. I'm not sure what the exact cut for rear facing is but I know it is 30 or 40 something and he weighes 22 lbs. He will definately reach the height cut off first. We had a carrier car seat first that was for up to 22 lbs but stopped using it at like 7 months. He has plenty of room in his convertable car seat and its very comfy. I wish my seat was that comfy! It will go forward facing with the harness and be a booster with a car seat belt too. We love it! And got it at a GREAT price at Sam's club. But I'm pretty sure they had car seat laws when I was a baby. Lol

we turned logan around sometime after 1 year, but it wasn't as long as we could have waited to be honest. i do think it's best to keep them rear-facing as long as possible & we hadalso heard that they were thniking about updating the reccommendation.

if Coop is happy rear-facing and hasn't reached the limit, keep him turned around as long as you want. :)
