Mac & Cheese!!!

If you know me, you know that I am very picky about what my son eats. When I could I made his baby food. He does not have anything with cow's milk. This includes yogurt. I find it ridiculas that people give their baby's those yogurt melts and the yogurt made for babies. They are not supposed to have cow's milk until they are 1! I would also like to know what Gerber is thinking putting cow's milk in baby food made for infants 6 months plus!??
Anyway, since Cooper is only about 2 weeks away from turning 1, *sniffle, sniffle* I decided to cave and let him have his first mac and cheese! It was organic so that made me feel better about it. I had a harder time with this than I did when I started him on solids and gave him rice cereal! I was very emotional. I guess because I knew after I give him cow's milk he won't be as dependant on my milk.
He liked the mac & cheese ok but he was starting to get fussy so he wasn't very interested in eating. He ate about ten bites and then refused to eat another bite. I guess its good he wouldn't eat much to start him on milk slowly so it doesn't upset his tummy. Its the end of an era :(

awww. <3

Logan still rarely gets cow's milk and he's turning 2 in a few days. he gets calcium, vitamin D and fats from other sources. i don't understand why our culture is so (cow's)milk-obsessed.

Me either! The only reason I let him have it was that the choices were a hotdog, a pb&j, or the mac & cheese. It was the lesser of 3 evils. Lol. If he wasn't so close to being one I would have just bought him food before we ate. After he turns one I'm going to let him have half whole milk/ half breast milk and from there we will just have to wait and see :)

first i have to say that every mom has to do what she thinks is best for her babies....
with that said. i have given isabel Yo Baby organic yogurt for breakfast since she was about 7 months old. She loves it and for me it is not an issue. I know about the no milk til 1 yr. but she never had an issue digesting the yogurt. Part of my reasoning I suppose is that if a company is concerned enough to make organic yogurt with whole milk versus all the sugary yogurts made by other companies then they have put at least some thought into it. I know not all companies are health conscious, but I do feel somewhat safer trusting those companies who are making organic and lower sugar choices for their food...atleast some of their foods. I made all her food for months, and have done many things to ensure that she has a healthy start regarding what goes into her body. I just think you have to be careful of pointing fingers at things that may seem "ridiculous" to you...they may not be to others. I have friends who give their young children coke and sugar all the time which with all honestly I do think is ridiculous and unhealthy, but that does not make them a horrible mommy or their kids destined to be unhealthy. Just me...you dont have to agree of course, but just remember there is more than one way to feed a healthy baby.

Oh I forgot to say I don't think its a big deal for babies who have formula to be given milk products since they already get milk in their formula so their tummies are already used to it. Cooper's is not. He has never had anything with cow's milk in it so I was leary of giving it to him becaise I didn't know how his tummy would react. He eats the Yo Soy organic yogurt. Its made with soy instead of milk.

first let me say I think you are a wonderful mommy and anytime I question something you say it is just because I like discussing things, not to hurt your feelings. Ok...so I guess for me the waiting til 1 is more about making sure Happy Baby was getting enough nutrients from her fruits and veggies before taking her off formula (or breastmilk in your case). I take those age recommendations as recommendations rather than absolute because there is no magic reaction that happens the day they turn 1. some babies may tolerate milk much earlier and some much later or even never. Perhaps i may not understand your last comment about milk being different for formula fed babies, but if that is correct then would a newborn who tolerates formula also be ok with milk?? i may actually blog about something similar to this...it has got me thinking.....hummmm.....

I know you aren't trying to hurt my feelings. I like discussing too. I hadn't thought of the newborn thing. But what I meant was since formula fed babies have been exposed to milk in formula they are more likely not to have a bad reaction to it in other forms. I read something along these lines somewhere I will try to find it again. I know they are just guidelines. That's why I have let Coop have some cow's milk products this week. I'm just trying to start slow so there are no bad digestive issues. As a mommy yourself I know I don't have to say specifically what issues I'm talking about. Lol
